The Radical Film Network (RFN) is an international network for individuals and organisations involved in politically-engaged and aesthetically innovative film culture. The network was founded in 2013 when a group of activists, academics, filmmakers and programmers involved in radical film culture met to discuss the ways in which they could work together to support its development, growth and sustainability. Since then it has grown rapidly, and now consists of more than one hundred organisations across four continents.
‘Sustaining Alternative Film Cultures’ (2015-18) is an AHRC-funded research project led by Dr Steve Presence and Professor Mike Wayne (Brunel) in association with the RFN. The project explores the challenges and opportunities involved in building digital cultural networks, and has staged several events and conferences across the UK and beyond, including a major three-day conference in New York City in May 2017. An edited collection of essays from leading scholars, activists and filmmakers involved in the network will be published by Routledge in 2019.
